I’ve also noticed that when I sometimes ride without a helmet, motorists steer well clear of this “crazy cyclist”. I put it into the revenge effect category… the trouble is when they don’t see you, that’s normally when you have an accident & you need the protection.

By the way, just to clarify, I normally do wear a helmet on a serious ride, but if I just have to ride 2km down the road where there is no traffic, I don’t see the point.
