If the water is flowing, turn back – the chances are it’s too deep and you will get swept away. Other reasons for avoiding floodwater include sudden changes in water depth, hidden potholes and getting splashed by passing vehicles.

Fording deep water also adds to maintenance requirements for the bike, e.g. having to strip-down and regrease wheel and pedal bearings. Drain-off water that has got into the wheel rims – corrosion in the spoke nipples will give problems the next time you need to true the wheel or replace a spoke.
