And I would never cycle on Union Turnpike for more than a block or two. Take the side streets. There are other ways to go.

However, when cycling north from Oxford on the Woodstock Road, and trying to cross the A40 to continue north towards Woodstock, I felt less secure than anywhere I’ve ever cycled, including the Place de la Bastille and Place de la Concorde in Paris. If you follow the cycle path, you have to rely on several lanes of drivers stopping for you, but if you cycle in traffic, you’re dealing with maniacs trying to get around an impossible “roundabout,” if that’s the right word for it. I felt nearly as nervous driving through there, except for the fact that being enclosed in a metal cage with airbags helped my sense of security. It’s better if you head up the Banbury Road and then take the back roads to the cycle/pedestrian path over the A40, but that’s far from ideal if you’re headed northwest.

In town, Oxford is fine for cycling. But try to get out, and it’s rather different. Of course you could take the N5 cycle route along the towpath, and negotiate stones, mud, and stinging nettles. Even my favorite way out, via Old Marston and Elsfield, wasn’t ideal.

Sounds like hell on earth – or is it an age thing?
