I headed out with the prevailing winds and the benefit of a very, very slight downslope for 45km and then the return leg was all that you might expect.

I quite quickly realised that it would be a wise move to switch my bike computer to a screen which didn’t display my speed. Unfortunately, it did display the temperature and as I edged along, I developed a morbid fascination with just how cold it was going to get and therefore just how cold I was going to get.

The upside is that having reached home, I was then in an astonishingly buoyant mood for the entire night.

I have just done my first hilly 100k of the year and it went surprisingly well, not quite a float but everything worked better than expected for the first 90k and then the battery went flat!
