Some Reasons to be Optimistic about Cycling
1. Environmental Concerns
People are increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of
burning fossil fuels. 50% of car journeys are less than 2 miles. Cycling could easily take the place of many car journeys. This helps to reduce both global warming and improved pollution levels in city centres. People feel increasingly attracted to cycling for environmental reasons.
2. Health Issues
Obesity seems to be a growing problem in developed countries. Obesity is causing increased levels of heart disease and other respiratory problems. Cycling is an excellent form of exercise for improving physical health and avoiding obesity. Many are encouraging people to cycle for these reasons.
3. Gridlock and Congestion
Especially in the UK, congestion is a real problem. Therefore, commuters are realising that cycling can often be the quickest way to get to work. It also makes commuters less reliant on public transport, which can often be delayed.
4. Enduring Popularity of Cycling
The bike remains the most popular invention of modern society. There is something perpetually attractive about cycling. It gives a feeling of freedom with relatively low cost.
5. New Technology make cycling more attractive.
Whilst the basic design of the bike has remained the same. There are many new technologies that have helped make cycling a more enjoyable activity. For example, this includes:
- GPS tracking systems
- Lightweight, waterproof clothing.
- Tyres which are more puncture resistant.
- Hydraulic brakes e.t.c
