These are some pictures taken in Oxford.
“About 20,000 cycle commuters steam into Oxford city centre each day, negotiating more than 36,000 cars, lorries and kamikaze buses, potholes, cobble stones and disoriented tourists en route.”
It is fascinating to see the diversity of people who ride around town on bikes. I mainly took these photos over the past few weeks. See: also Photos of Oxford Colleges
Bikes outside the Radcliffe Camera. People used to picnic on the lawn outside this great library. But, it became too noisy for the students. Therefore black railings were put up; these railings have become an unofficial bike rack.

Not all cycle paths are so good though. There is actually supposed to be a cycle path to the left of that traffic island. (taken on outskirts of Oxford)

Parts of Oxford are Prohibited for through traffic. Broad street gets very little traffic making cycling very enjoyable.

It’s not all cycling Utopia though. Cyclists have to battle with the almost incessant stream of buses.

[...] Cyclox is a local cycling campaign for Oxford, probably similar to many local cycling campaigns. As a general rule I don’t join any political parties or pressure groups, but, decided to join Cyclox for a few reasons. There leaflet has many good common sense ways to improve cycling in Oxford – better facilities, safer roads, lobbying for better standards of driving, and also trying to improve the image of cyclists by promoting safe cycling techniques. You feel that their goals are quite achievable and taking part might make a real improvement to cycling in Oxford – something I enjoy a lot. (see pics of Oxford cycling) [...]

Hi,
Can you please tell me whether there are any kids cycling clubs in Oxford (same as football clubs and the like)?
Many thanks

Brilliant pictures, it’s made me very wistful. I used to live in Oxford, and loved it but was too scared to cycle! Ironically, I now live and cycle around central London which clearly has many more obstacles to negotiate!
Oxford is a fabulous city, and I’m so please to see so many enjoying it by bike!

I spent approx 25 years fighting bike crime in Oxford and having retired from the Thames Valley Police, I am now enjoying my retirement on the Isle of Wight.I know John Woodburn and Ken Lansbury well and the article on age related cycling is excellent. The photo’s are also excellent and I would certainly recommended this site

Its so good to see so many different types of people enjoying cycling in Oxford. The ones in the gowns made me laugh. Great pics.
Car drivers in Oxford must be very considerate towards cyclists judging by the number of cyclists not wearing crash helmets!

The lane you call Catte Street is really called Brasenose Lane. Catte Street is on the other side of the Radcliffe Camera.
