I don’t think the Times really care that they have annoyed lots of cyclists, or even care that they may have instigated more motorists to attack cyclists. The article by Matthew Parris gained them tremendous exposure and links. - The irony is that all the cycling websites who have linked to the article have actually helped the Times website (more links equals higher google rankings). In the blog world this is called ‘linkbait’ write something controversial so people link to it and this helps improve your website. - Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter if it is morally irresponsible and gutter journalism.
Anyway the Times published another article by Alison Steed which made the good point that 150 cyclists are killed each year. Many of these due to iresponsible driving. There are countless more examples of cyclists who are left injured due to bad driving. This includes some cases of motorists deliberately attacking cyclists.
