Speedplay Pedals Review

speedplayOnce you have got used to clipless pedals you won’t want to go back. My first clipless pedals were the more common Look pedals. The reason I switched to speedplay pedals was:

  1. I had some problems with my knees and (rightly or wrongly) I blamed the Look pedals and the way movement was restricted. I liked the idea of having a large angle of float that comes with speedplay
  2. I wanted to save weight. Speedplay come in at 205 grams and 150grams for Titanium version. These are the lightest pedals on the market. However, the gap between speedplay and Look has been reduced with the introduction of new models like the Look Keo. At 280 grams + cleats they offer good value for money at only £39.99 link for Keo
  3. Easier to Maintain. I always found the look cleats a bit fiddly to get in the right position. Speedplay are much easier because of the greater degree of lateral movement.

Speedplay Zero - Stainless Steel

Advantages of speedplay zero

  • zero to 15 degrees of micro adjustable float
  • easy cleat set up and adjustment no need to adjust any springs
  • dual sided entry for easier clip in.
  • half the weight of most clipless systems
  • Fantastic cornering ability
  • 206g total weight

I have been very happy with the Speedplay zero. They require very little maintenance, are lightweight and there is no chance of scrapping the pedals on corners (like sometimes used to happen with look. They are definitely a little strange when you first test them. But, it is amazing how quickly you can get used to the large float. Cycling with speedplay feels very natural.

Speedplay Titanium Zero

The Titanium model will set you back another £50. The main advantage is a saving of 45 grams weight. It’s quite an expensive way to save £50 grams, so it is only really for the weight fanatics . Speedplay Titanium Zero

I find the speedplay pedals to be a little heavy when you include the cleat, both pedal and cleat should be considered when figuring weight saving. The weight of the pedal and cleat make up the rotating mass one has to move, but I have to say they are hard to beat for cornering.
