The standard road bike, usually offers a front chainring choice of 39-53. With a rear cassette of 25-11, this enables a sufficient range of gears for the racing cyclist. For example, a 53 - 11, would enable a cyclist to easily ride at 55Kmph. A 39-25, would enable a fit cyclist to climb most of the gradients found in the UK.
However, for the touring cyclist this may not be the optimal gear choice. Touring cyclists sometimes opt for a triple chainring, enabling a lower range of gears for carrying luggage up a steep climb. However, other riders often prefer to have a compact double chainring. This offers a choice such as 46-32. This is a lower range for those who don’t need to be racing at 55kmph.
