Similar to the Zipp 404 wheelset, the Zipp 808 offers improved aerodynamics to give one of the fastest wheels on the market. At £1,200 for both front and rear, it is pricey but worth the investment if you are looking for a legal set of aero racing wheels.
One thing that sets it apart from the 404 wheels is its dimpled surface on the rims. This has been found to be more aerodynamic on disc wheels. Zipp have a patent pending for this design. The manufacturers state it is faster than any tri spoke and also legal for all triathlons. At 1882g it is not the lightest wheelset on the market, but, the aerodynamic advantage outweighs this weight effect on all but the hilliest of courses. A lighter wheel would be the Zipp 1080
Note: Zipp 808 meet UCI requirements but not UK Cycling Time Trials rules. Because of racing on open roads to traffic, the UK CTT limited the size of the solid front section, this means Zipp 808 cannot be used in UK time Trials. This caught out Bradley Wiggins in a 10 mile time trail on the Levens course. He did 18.00 for a 10 mile time trial, but, unfortuantely didn’t realise that his team issue Zipp 808 wheels contravened UK CTT rules.
As with any carbon rim, it is advised that you use special carbon pads to deal with the breaking surface.
