If you are looking for a good value heart rate monitor / combined speedometer, this model from Polar has many good features for just £100.
It offers the usual heart rate and target zone, but also a speedometer through Polar’s built in speed sensor, it can also calculate your estimated time of arrival back home, based on your current speed. Also offers a cadence measure which is pretty useful for training and keeping a good pedal rhythm. Customer reviews have generally been positive. As usual you pay a bit for the Polar name and Brand, but, offers excellent reliability and practicality.

Polar AXN 700 at Amazon
The Polar AXN 700 is a real top of the range heart rate monitor for the professional athlete or very serious hobbyist. It is hard to think of anything else a heart rate monitor could do – apart from make you go faster and on a practical level GPS would be good. But, at £329 it is not for the feint hearted.
The Polar AXN measures various aspects of a training run from heart rate to heart-rate to altitude, outside-temperature and even the weather. All this data can then be downloaded using the software they provide to give you a detailed record of your training run – giving a good guide to calorie intake, performance and fitness.
Made of Titanium, the watch looks suitably impressive, but, it might not appeal to more delicate tastes. It can also be a little uncomfortable, especially if you have thin wrists.
If you’re not worried about outlaying £300 + and you are a bit of a stato and techno buff – this is definitely the watch for you.

Polar F6 Heart Rate Monitor at Amazon.co.uk
The Polar F6 is an attractive and compact heart rate monitor with an extensive range of components.
In particular it has:
- Basic heart rate in clear figures
- Target training zones with alarm for when you go out of zones
- Downloadable files from your training sessions
- Allows you to check the number of calories burnt, though I always find this feature rather dubious
At £52, it is not the cheapest heart rate monitor, but, if you are looking for a relatively low price, waterproof watch and heart rate monitor the F6 will do the job.
Disadvantages of Polar F6
- Like most Polar watches you can’t replace the battery yourself and have to get it sent off. However, they can last upto 5 years.
- Not so easy to set up downloading of data
