Cycling Shoes

A good paid of cycling shoes is indispensable for any serious cyclist.

The first thing is to invest in a good pair of clipless pedals and compatible shoes. Clipless pedals offer greater efficiciency and comfort when cycling, but, for this you will need a specific pair of cycle shoes

Note: If you enjoy combining walking and cycling, invest in some spd pedals which means you can get a pair of cycling shoes without cleats at the bottom – making it difficult to wear.

When buying cycling shoes there are important things to bear in mind.

Right Size is most important. The most important thing when buying shoes is to get a pair that fit you well. Bear in mind that when you pedal and the blood starts pumping through your legs, your foot can expand half a size – especially in warm weather.

Word of warning. Shoe sizes are notoriously unreliable. I have worn size 46,47 and 48. It is manufacturers having different standards of shoe size.

Wider Feet. As well as length, some shoe firms offer different size of width fitting. This is excellent for those with wider feet. However, unfortunately, it is not very common so you will have less choice.

Power Transfer. Shoes play an important role in power transfer. Therefore when buying look for a strong and rigid carbon sole.

Weight. As you are willing to pay more, you will be able to get a slighly lighter shoe. However, if you are a beginner, don’t feel obliged to pay over £100 for a pair of shoes as the improvement in performance will be marginal.

Adjustability. For road racing, you will benefit from having shoes which have a high degree of adjustability so you can tighten up the straps towards the end of a stage. For triathlon or time trials this is less important and for triathlons ease of entry is most important.
