When real leather chamois shorts were popular, a chamois cream was essential. This is because the leather chamois could dry and become hardened after wash. A good chamois cream will help to keep the real chamois more flexible and less willing to chafe.
These days, most cycling shorts have a synthetic chamois. This means the use of chamois cream is less essential. However, on long rides, I like to use a chamois cream, rubbing directly into crotch area. It creates a thin layer of lubricant to remove chaffing and create a more comfortable ride. For short rides, I tend not to bother.
Chamois Creams
Assos Chamois Cream.
Like most Assos products, they tend to be a bit more expensive. This is only 12 and does the simple job of helping to remove chaffing and maintain better lubrication. Can be applied direct to skin. Will help do job very effectively. The tub will also last a long time.
Nature Kiss Chafe Ease
Nature Kiss Chafe Ease, cheaper at 9. With added herbs, not sure how much these help. But, the cream does job of providing simple, effective lubrications. Chafe Ease
Udderly Smooth Chamois Cream
A very popular chamois cream. Very smooth and easy to apply, feels good against skin. Very good value at only 6.00, includes Shea Butter. Udderly smooth Chamois cream at Wiggle
Sudocrem
I also use sudocrem, but, this is usually for dealing specifically with saddle sores. It acts as antibiotic and also helps relieve sores and chaffing.
Alternatives to Chamois Cream
In the old days, they would use the like of butter and olive oil.
