A Nice Comfortable Ride

Not every cyclist is concerned about speed, many cycle for enjoyment and so look for bikes with the most comfortable features.

Features which will make for a comfortable ride

Wide tyres or half way between slicks and mountain tyres. You don’t necessarily want a full width mountain bike tyre as on the road this width will slow you down.

Wide Gear Range. The more gears you have, the easier you can pedal on the flat or up hill. If you get an inner ring with 24 teeth, this should prove adequate for even the slowest pedellar.

Suspension Seat / Fork. Some bikes come with suspension seats which offer cushioning for a bumpy ride. Suspension forks also help for difficult terrain, but, they are not essential. A carbon fork will definitely help provide a more comfortable ride. Steel is also a good material.

Good point about the right saddle as this causes more people to stop cycling that almost anything else. The problem is the intense pressure that conventional saddles put on the sensitive perineum area and this not only leads to numbness in both men and women but also potential health issues such as erectile dysfunction, urinary tracts infections, boils and irritation. A US study recently showed that riding with a noseless saddle resolves these problems and ECD has more information on this and other issues on its website (www.ecdsports.com). They have just launched a new noseless saddle and it was tested by Tom Kevill Davies, the Hungry Cyclist, on a road trip to Paris recently – he was very positive about the benefits (http://www.thehungrycyclist.com/blog/2009/06/ecd-introduce-radical-new-cycling-seat.html).
