When your racing, a good pair of tubulars is not something you want to economise on. I recommend getting the best quality as the extra cost will almost be invariably worth it.
Continental Competition tyres come in at around 50. It may sound a bit extravagant, especially when you could soon puncture. But, for the money you get a good combination of puncture protection, low rolling resistance and lightweight.
Features
- VECTRAN protection
Continental competition weight – manufacturer state – 230g.
I have found continental competition to be quite hard wearing, despite having a Vectran layer I found it not immune from small slits which appear in the tyre from getting cut by sharp stones. At least it shows the puncture resistance of the tyre to absorb these kinds of scratches.
They can be pumped up to 180psi which is fine for racing on the road. They feel pretty solid on tight corners and were relatively straight forward to fit on.
To be honest, I haven’t tried many of the cheaper varieties of tubs. I have used Vittoria .. and to be honest it’s pretty hard to tell the difference between the two.
Not a tub for training on. But, definitely good for racing and top level sportives. Definitely recommended.
