My second road bike was a mail order Columbus SLX from Ribble cycles. A couple of years later I upgraded to a Reynolds 7005 tubing with Shimano 105.
My most recent purchase from ribble cycles was my current road bike and hill climb bike.
I wanted to buy a lightweight bike on a limited budget. Ribble bike builder offered one of the most economical ways of buying a lightweight bike.
I chose a lightweight Scandium Frame – Dedacci SC61.10A. The groupset was Shimano Dura Ace 9 speed. I also choose lightweight upgrades such as carbon seat posts and carbon sadles. For each component I looked at the weight saving and the actual cost involved. This helped get a bike weighing 6.5kg for less than 1,000.
Ribble Bike Builder
The advantage of the Ribble bike builder is that you can put together your custom bike matching exactly to your requirements. This saves money because you don’t need to spend any extra money on upgrades once you have bought the bike.
Problems with Ribble?
I have been reasonably happy with my 3 Ribble bikes. The first one had a slight frame wobble, but, I’m not sure when this started to occur ( I was very inexperience with bikes at the time). Despite this problem I still decided to buy a second bike and then a third bike. They were delivered in good condition, without any problem. Like any mail order firm, it is difficult and expensive to return the bike if there are problems. This is the risk that you take, on the one hand it is cheaper than a local bike shop, but, on the other hand it is more difficult to deal with any problems.
On several occasion, I have used their mail order service to buy components and have received good service. I would be happy to get another bike from Ribble Cycles, although they don’t do time trial bikes
