There are some things worth buying in your local bike shop – like bikes!, but inner tubes are not one of them. I am up in Yorkshire for two weeks. I always like to have two spare inner tubes on the bike for any long ride and for bad luck with punctures. After one puncture I visited a local bike shop, I used to use many years ago when I first got into cycling. I was pleased to see the shop thriving, they were in the process of selling two tandem bikes. The staff were helpful, but, at £5.99 for an inner tube, I will be trying to avoid running short whilst on tour. Evans sell individual tubes from £2.99. If you buy in packs of 10 or 20, you can get sometimes get more discounts.
It’s a funny thing puncturing, you can go for months without getting the slightest hint of puncture – despite running on threadbare tires, and then like the proverbial bus, 2 or 3 turn up all at the same time.
Inner Tube Sizes
It is essential you get the inner tube to fit diameter of tyre. For a road bike, this will invariably be a 700c. Inner tubes, usually fit a range of widths e.g 700c *18-25. This will fit any road tyre of a width between 18-25.
For mountain bike, leisure bikes, the size will usually be 26″
Generally, road tubes will use Presta valves. Mountain bike and children’s bikes use Schraeder valves – same as for cars.
Presta valves are better at being blown to high pressure.
