Fiji To Host Tour de France

In a move that has surprised many in the world of cycling, the UCI have announced that Fiji is to host the 2013 version of the Tour de France.

Though Fiji don’t have much of a reputation for cycling, the event is seen as a unique opportunity for Fiji to invest in Alpine passes, a replica Champs Elysée, and innumerable pieces of road furniture to make it more interesting for riders.

In a move that is likely to upset traditionalists, the UCI President defended the decision claiming that Fiji had many advantages such as lack of cars on the road, the widespread use of clenbuterol in farming, and the small nature of the island will mean that the need for long, tiring transfers will be reduced. It will also be ideal for spectators as the cyclists will go round and round the same island roads.

P. Myduid, the UCI president denied any vote rigging, as he took a call from his new luxury, tax free, Pacific Island. “I don’t know why people are complaining, I mean we could have had it in Bahrain or Siberia, but, that would just have been silly, and anyway they didn’t give us enough money.”

Came across this blog post by chance!

Having Scuba dived in Fiji in 1992 i am aware of the attributes of this beautiful Island and would Love the chance to ride my 16th TDF there. New Caladonia could also host some stages before All the Racers transfer back to Corsica and then Mainland France before their triumphant arrival in Paris at the end of July !

Racers will certainly know that they have been in a competition and there will be calls to return there for the World Road Race Championships.

So, is this a gag? Is La Tour still on and Fiji is just another date in the calendar? Or has the world gone truly mad?
