I received a free batch of Zip Vit Energy chews through the post. A different way of taking on carbohydrates, these kind of feel like an expensive version of wine gums. They have 46grams of carbohydrate per pack, half of which 22 grams is sugars.
It’s main ingredients are
- Tapioca Syrup, Sugar and Maltodextrin.
- There are also several vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, Nianci, Vit C and Vit E and sodium to act as an electrolyte
The energy source means they are best used during a ride to provide a quick source of easily digestible carbohydrate. Being like sweats, they aren’t so easy to eat on the move. It requires a little skill to pick out the chews without dropping the rest onto the ground. They wouldn’t be good in a race, where you would be better off with energy bars or gels. However, for long rides they would provide a good change of food. I ate a packet 40mins before a 20 mile race. I wanted to top up energy levels for next 2 hours of race. It seemed to work well.
They are quite tasty (Pomegranate & Watermelon flavour, especially good) with an interesting consistency. They give a sense of freshness and the texture of the chew makes a good change from just energy drinks. They also feel very easy to digest. Though on any long ride, you would want to see how you react, and I wouldn’t rely on one energy source alone. They don’t seem to melt too easily and I could eat without getting hands sticky.
Geletain and dairy free is good for me a vegetarian.
Main drawback is that at £2.20 they are one of the most expensive way of taking on energy. Perhaps if you buy in bulk you will be able to get discount.
