Knog Party Frank Lock Review

Knog are newcomers to the lock market. The’ve tried to be innovative in coming up with bright bendy locks. It certainly looks different to your average lock.

The Knog Party Frank lock is a lightweight (250grams), low security lock – Knog rate it 3/10 for security.

  • The Cable Diameter 12mm, The Steel Cable Diameter inside is 5mm.
  • Length: 620mm

A steel cable diameter of 0.5 cm and a security rating of 3/10 means it is  fine to lock up:

a) inside police station.

b) outside your gramdma’s house in the Lake District or

c) Outside at Frank’s party. Frank being the owner of a luxury island on the Carribean, population (5)

Obviously, this is not a lock to use as main security device for your best road bike. A pair of good cable cutters would be through this lock pretty quick. It looks inviting to a cable cutter. However, I don’t think anybody is going to buy a 250gram 1cm width lock to secure their £5,000 Trek Madone in downtown Brixton.

It is useful for:

  • A secondary lock to secure front wheel (I have once had front wheel removed from bike, where bike was firmly attached and left unscathed)
  • The quick lock to pick up some fish & chips, when you don’t want to bother carrying your 1Kg Kryptonite. Any lock is better than none for the opportune thief.
  • That second hand bike costing less than £50

  • It’s easy to operate. I like the feel of the bendy silicon. 3 Keys are good. Nicely colour co-ordinated too.
  • It’s easy to carry on a commuting bike just wrap around handlebars.

Disadvantages

  • If you were a bike insurance firm, you couldn’t recommend this lock.
  • One place, I might like to really use a lightweight lock is on a road ride, where I don’t usually carry a lock. This is lightweight, but, although it is good for commuter bike, you wouldn’t really want to carry on a road bike when training.
  • It soon picks up grime from your bike, spoiling the nice bright yellow effect. To be fair, it’s very easy to clean off. But, who wants to start cleaning a lock?

Product Features from Manufacturer

  • Patented seamless overmould using medical grade UV stable silicone.
  • Braided loose bound steel cable with fibre core (making cable more secure in the event of bolt cutter attack).
  • Includes 3 colour-coded overmoulded keys with wrist coil.
  • 1000 combination blade style lock cylinder.
  • 8mm Stainless steel locking shackle.
  • No leverage points.
  • Cable Diameter 12mm, Steel Cable Diameter 5mm.
  • Non Mark / Scratch surface.
  • Available in 12 Colours.

Would I buy?

Probably not, because I’m not really in the market for a lightweight, secondary lock. I would be more interested in seeing the upper end of Knog’s lock lock product range.

Overall

It is a good product, as long as you are aware of the limitations of any lock weighing 250grams and being 1 cm in diameter. If you want a secondary lock or just a quick spare lock to pick up in emergencies, this is quite a nice piece. At around £15 it’s fair value for that secondary lock, which is easy to use
