When I’m reduced to cycling at 10kmph on a flat piece of road, I know the wind is pretty strong. Today, I was up on Bingley Moor (Near Ilkley and Keighley, West Yorkshire) the wind was pretty vicious. If it had been much stronger it would have been quite dangerous.
Here are some tips for cycling in wind.
Tips for cycling in the wind.
Cycle in Slipstream
I know this is a bit obvious but, cycling behind someone else can save upto 35% of your personal effort. In a road race, it is vital to make the most of this energy savings. Get used to riding close behind someone’s wheel.
Look for Direction of Wind.
It is important to know the direction of your wind. If you are riding into a sidewind, the best position is not directly behind another cyclist, but, to the side of him. In professional cycle races side winds can lead to the formation of echelons (where the peloton split, because everyone is trying to ride in the shelter of the wind)
Look for Natural Shelter
If you are riding on your own or doing a time trial, you will not be able to draft another cyclist. Riding close to the edge of the road can make a difference because you will get more shelter from natural obstacles like roads.
Don’t Churn A Big Gear
When a novice rides into the wind, it is tempting to get frustrated and just mash a big gear. However, when you become more used to riding into a headwind you will expect to have to make more effort for corresponding speed. Don’t panic just try to keep the same rhythm. When you turn round you will get the benefit.
Riding into the Wind to start Ride
If you are training on your own. It is advisable to start off your ride by riding in the direction from where the wind is coming from. This means if you get tired, pick up a slight injury or the weather turns it is easier to ride back home
Be careful of sidewinds.
When the wind is strong you need to be more careful when riding. Sometimes you may be riding in the shelter of a wall, but, when that wall ends a sidewind can catch you off guard, if you are not careful.
