Last year I published some classic time trial photos, by Bernard Thompson which were very popular. So this year I’ve found another 30 to publish.

Ray Booty
Ray Booty was the first man inside 4 hours for the 100 mile time trial. He rode 3 hrs. 58 mins. 28 secs. in the Bath Road Hundred of 1956

For many years, Time Trials were the Bread and Butter of British racing. This picture does invite a few cheesy comments though.

all great stuff, remember well the amersham course. up the league.!!!!!!!!!
just replying to one of the blogs re traffick build up over the years like most of my rivals in the golden years 1950s& 1960s we didn’thave the luxury of transport to & from events which meant a long ride there & a l;ong ride back but i never got tired of riding my bike in the cheshire country lanes cant do that now because i live in australia beautiful memories jonty
I worked for the company that printed the BBAR concert programme for 1955 or 1956 which I believe would have been one of Ray Booty’s victorious years and think I still have somewhere.
My father was Cliff Smith ( winner of 18 ’24′ hour time trials and Edinburgh to London record holder for 24 years) – brings back alot of memories of growing up in the world of cycling. Lovely photos, I remember the names so well. I recall Jock Wadley giving me a pen when I was a little girl. I still have all the photos taken of Cliff – lots by Bernard Thompson especially.
Hello Jean !
I have fond memories of Cliff. I used to live nearby ( top end of St. Saviour’s Road ) and I think he was a friend of my dad’s. Whenever I visited he was ‘on the rollers’. He used to give me his old silk tubs when I started racing as a junior. Unfortunately my racing career was neither as long or as memorable though….
Hello Eric !
Yes, I do remember you and what a lovely surprise to hear from you after all these years. I do hope you are well – are you still in Leicester? I remember your mum and dad too. My mum lived in The Circle until her death in 2006. As you probably already know Cliff died in August 1992 following an accident whilst out training on the Six Hills. I’m sure if he were still here today he would be still riding his bike!
The same ‘rollers’ were still being ridden upto his untimely death. Are you still cycling? Would love to hear your news !
Thanks for publishing those great photos. I used to do a bit of time trialling (10′s & 25′s) and well remember Webster and Cammish … along with Dave Lloyd!
