How Much to Spend On a Bike?

In deciding how much to spend on a bike, you need to decide how much you are going to use it and for what purpose.

£100. You can buy some bikes for £100. These bikes are at the cheapest end of production and so will have a similar quality. I don’t advise spending so little on a new bike, as you will tend to get poor performance. For an extra £50-£100, you will get a noticeable improvement in the quality of the bike leading to less brakedowns and the bike lasting longer.

£200. For£200, you can start to get a decent hybrid, commuting bike. There are many bikes around this price range and it is probably the most popular price for buying new bikes.

£400. For £400, you can start to get entry level road bikes and entry level mountain bikes. This is a good range for the complete beginner who wants to try more serious cycling. you will get reasonable performance for this price; if you are a beginner don’t worry about spending over a £1,000 because you the basic mechanism of the bike will be the same. For extra spending you will get better performance; but, the gains are fairly marginal.

£1,000. For £1,000 you can get a pretty good quality road bike and mountain bike. Your bike wouldn’t be out of place at an amateur race. For this price, you can start to get carbon fibre frames and more lightweight components.
