Graeme Obree’s new bike to attempt the landspeed record goes for an early outing. The new bike nicknamed ‘The Beatie’ will later have a full carbon fibre shell to increase streamlining.
As you expect from Obree’s bikes this throws away the rule book with an impressively unorthodox position.

I have to admit I wouldn’t fancy riding the bike at 90mph. It looks pretty unsteady at 10mph. (though bikes are often more stable at faster speeds)
I love the boyish enthusiasm Obree has for the bike.

Great to see Obree taking a shot at speed records.
He could lower the profile and reduce frontal area further.
Obree is an inspiring individual. His enthusiasm and creativity is awesome to watch. He looks like a 8 year old kid with a new bike. The act of growing up should not mean thinking less like a child but embracing that wonder, ability to dream and the questioning of the establish methods – why not?
I know prone bikes have not had much success in the world of speed records but based on the laws of physics it seems logical that prone is the next step forward in building a faster human powered vehicle.
Not sure how efficient that thing will be as he isn’t turning the pedals he only looks as if he is pumping them so only the quads will be producing the power. I see why he is doing it though, to cut down the frontal area.
Good luck to him, hope he smashes it. Always been an admirer of his training methods and dedication.
That’s taking the superman position one step further.
If anyone can ride that thing it’s Graeme, good luck to him!
