If you have carbon wheels with carbon rims, it is strongly advisable to get special brake pads which are designed for the different braking surface. To some extent, ordinary brake blocks can be used on carbon rims, but, they tend to heat up much quicker and can be dangerous on fast or wet descents.
Carbon Specific brake blocks will be better designed to reduce heat build up. They will also work on traditional alloy rims, though they may wear down pretty quick.
Sometimes I am switching between carbon racing wheels and alloy training wheels so this can be a bit of a pain, but, they last long enough to mean it is easier just to leave them on for both sets of wheels.
These Ashima Carbon Brake pad inserts can be bought for either Shimano or Campagnolo brakes.
