Any cyclist will, at some stage, have suffered being labelled pejoratively as one of ‘those irresponsible lycra lights’
Why is it assumed by many, that somehow people who ride bikes are one uniform group. If one cyclists behaves irresponsibly why is it assumed all people who ride bikes must behave the same?
Yet, if a motorist was to exceed the speed limit causing a fatal crash – would all motorists be labelled as irresponsible killers?
When there is another doping scandal in the Tour de France why do colleagues at work assume that because you also ride a bike, QED you must take EPO?
It is like saying because you play football, you must be overpaid and spoilt like all the premier league footballers.
When people find you are interested in cycling, why do so many people ask you ‘so when are you going to do the Tour de France?’ And then when you say, actually you have no plans they lose all interest. Just because you see someone kick a football around on a park, you don’t immediately ask them – so when are you going to play for Manchester United?
Why do people in a two tonne SUV feel threatened by a lycra clad cyclist? Given a collision between the 2 road users, there isn’t much uncertainty about who is more likely to end up in hospital.
Why do people assume all cyclists are the same. If a drunk driver knocks someone down, we don’t label all motorists as irresponsible drunk drivers. But, if someone gets annoyed because they saw a cyclist riding on the pavement, they have a tendency to label all cyclists as the same.
