Positive Image of Cycling in Press

Recently I posted about the unsavoury article by Matthew Parris on the decapitation of cyclists. Often it seems cycling makes the newspapers for the wrong reasons.

With this in mind, it is pleasing to come across the odd article which paints some of the positive benefits of cycling.

This South African newspaper reports how cycling has been used as a way to motivate and inspire young people, who might otherwise drift into mindless activities. Cycling Inspiration

Staff at Ocean view High school, Cape Town say that cycling is helping to give children something to fill their leisure time.

Abdul Slarmie, talks of the radical changes that the cycling team is helping to introduce

“Teenagers in the area often fall victim to socio-economic evils, such as drugs, gangsterism and teenage pregnancy. One pupil told me that if he wasn’t on the team, he would be at home, doing nothing.”

Faahizah Callaghan, 15, who gained an award for most promising cyclist was pleased to find cycling was not just a male sport. She talks of her new found interest in cycling.

” I enjoy everything about cycling – the pain, the freedom when I ride down the hills – and it keeps me in shape.”

Now, it would be nice to see cycling introduced in a few more British schools.
