Tips for Beginners to Cycling

cycling

I’m never sure who reads my daily blogs on cycling. Everything from ramblings on some obscure timetrial to random photos of Oxford cyclists. In the past I’ve have written lots of practical tips, but, recently have been more inspired to write sarcastic commentaries on driving and commuting.  However, recently, I have kept meeting people who have either just taken up cycling or who are seriously considering it. The interesting thing, is how many people would like to start cycling / cycle more with just a little encouragement. So, over next few weeks, I’m going to write a series of articles aimed at beginners to cycling. Hopefully, it will be of interest to even everyday cyclists.

Topics Might Include:

  • Buying a Bike – Good bikes are not expensive! (at least compared to cars)
  • Bike Accessories – Have you ever seen a bike with furry dice on the windscreen? – neither have I.
  • Bike Maintenance.  How to mend punctures and other jobs you’d rather leave to someone else.
  • Riding on the Road – How to learn to live with and love motorists (OK, well maybe not love motorists, but at least make our journey a little safer.)
  • What To Wear / What not to wear. – How cycling can improve your image not worsen it.
  • What next? How to go from your 1 mile commute to your first cycle sportive or first race.
  • Cycling and Fitness
  • Practical Cycling.

If you have any other questions on cycling you’d like a professional, knowledgeable cyclist to answer – you could always try visiting a local bike shop.

Alternatively, you can  leave a comment on this post -  which I may well forget about. But, I might even answer with something useful.

Hi – I think your blog is great. I like the photos of Oxford. I also live in Oxford, and would be interested to know more about the routes you take on your training routes. I’ve just got a new racer and am planning to go further afield…

I found your blog on London Cyclist Top 50 Cycling blogs 2010 by Andreas. Looks good. Could you give some tips on positioning on roundabouts and traffic lights etc. I would love to cycle to work but its scary looking.

    First, great blog!!!

How about, how set up a new bike (seat, handlebars etc…)

Nothing like a seat cutting you in two to put you off.

    cheers

I came across your blogg when looking for RSS feeds recently. I’m a lapsed cyclist from the 1960′s & I’m just about to retire & I’ve taken it up again. I’m having to find out about the new kit available today not just the bike but the clothing (my non racing clothing was plus fours, long woollen socks, chunky wool sweaters knitted by my mum, woolly hat – modern stuff is brill!).
Your blogg is truly terrific. I especially liked the item with the video showing how they do things in Denmark, Netherlands & Colombia – a cyclist’s Shranglia!
    Keep going it’s much appreciated.
