I’m pretty fortunate to find myself stranded in a situation where I at least have access to a decent road bike. True, Jamaica, Queens, New York is hardly ideal cycling country, but, as long as you can get out and maintain your fitness it’s a real boon. I do feel for those stuck in camps at JFK airport.
For the past five or six years, I’ve kept a daily cycle log which details every ride I do. I don’t put much only
- Date, Place cycled to, Distance, Time, Average Speed, Other Notes
- Any race with position, time, course, windspeed e.t.c
Other notes are usually things like time for certain hill climbs used in training.
I enjoy doing it and it can be interesting reading previous years. It helps you remember epic rides and brings back memories of 100 mile rides in the middle of November, or whatever. It is also useful for gauging relative fitness and how you are progressing relative to previous years.
Another aspect of a daily cycle log is that it does motivate you to keep training and rack up the miles. In a good month I will do 800-1000 miles.
Since I don’t have access to my daily log book and since you always loose any bits of paper stuck away in a suitcase, I’m going to put recent rides I can remember in this blog post below.
- Sat – 10th – 20 miles around velodrom
- Mon – 12th – Nine intervals of 2.00mins up short hill on 205 st. total – 30 miles
- Thurs 15th – 10 mile Time trial 25.19 (tyres were 30psi) total 20 miles
