Nicole Cooke to Lead New Professional Team

Nicole Cooke, one of the leading female professional cyclists, is to lead Britain’s first female professional team. It represents a big development for women’s cycling in the UK. It is indicative in the growth of female professional cycling. As Nicole Cooke points out the number of professional teams has increased from 24 to 41. She said:

“It’s the biggest step forward in the women’s sport in this country since I don’t know when to be honest, so that has got to be good news.

“We would never have been able to put together a British women’s team like this five years ago.

“This indicates that the sport is taking significant strides forward and it’s a great time to be involved.”

Nicole Cooke, is ranked number 1 in the World Rankings. Amongst her numerous victories include the prestigious female Giro d’Italia. She won a bronze medal in the 2006 Commonwealth games, whilst representing Wales.

Britain has had various male professional teams, one team competed in the Tour de France in the 1980s, but, without much success. The team later disbanded
