After riding the BTTC champs, I was approached by cycling author and journalist Matt Rendell for a short contribution to his cycling podcast.
It wasn’t so much for my record breaking ride of being over nine minutes behind Bradley Wiggins; but he had heard about Sri Chinmoy in the 1970s through musicians such as Mahavishnu John McLaughlin (1), (whose music was inspired by Sri Chinmoy). Matt was interested to find as well as music there was also a Sri Chinmoy Cycling Team, and that Sri Chinmoy had himself competed in three 24 hour cycle races in the 1970s.
It’s kind of curious to be sandwiched in between the likes of Tony Martin (HTC Columbia) and Geraint Thomas (Team Sky). At one point in the podcast I say something like, ‘it was good to be in same ballpark as the Pros,’ I think I was flattering myself a little bit there… nine minutes is a lot of extra power.
Funnily enough I was chatting To G, after race who also speaks in same podcast. Very nice guy; for him it was very different race to Tour de France with having to race on open roads, getting slowed down by traffic at roundabouts e.t.c. a bit different from helicopters and all. For us amateurs it’s like the biggest event of the year. A crowd at a time trial! there’s a novelty.
O well, this weekend it’s back to normality and the Bentley bypass(A31) – up and down a dual carriageway filled only with cars and passing lorries….
The latest podcast is here
BTW: My piece is at about 60% into audio recording.
Matt is the author of a few books such as the ‘Death of Marco Pantani‘
