Discomfort in the Knee

Ripponden

Saturday was a grand day. Sunny and relatively mild. Well 5 degrees feels mild after many weeks of sub zero temperatures. I cycled to Burford about 55 miles. I was intending to do more, but some discomfort in the knee forced me to turn back.

I wouldn’t say it was pain, but gave a nagging impression of discomfort – a feeling that this precarious joint was slightly out of place.

It is the kind of ‘injury’ where you want to keep riding sensibly to see whether it gets worse or better. It is not a time to push through your first 100 miles and then to spend two weeks with your knee in great pain. I am trying to ride every other day for about 1-2 hours. If that goes well for a week, I will push it up.

I’m optimistic it is just one of those minor pains which will just disappear as soon as it came.

Over the years I’ve had long periods of time off the bike due to problematic knees, and I think you can become overly sensitive to any recurrence.

The only thing I will take for them is drinking lots of water and some oil like Cod Liver Oil.

Yes, Cleat position is very important. Hope knee gets steadily better.

Over the last 3 months I to have had a lot of pain in my right knee after about 25 miles of cycling, I have regularly completed 100mile sport teifs without problems. I checked the cleat alignment and discovered my right heel was turned in about 1″ compared to the left, I think this may have happened after a 19mph fall on icy untreated road last year. I corrected the cleat 2 weeks ago and it seem to much better, I still sometimes feel a slight pain but nothing like what it was before, I think it will improve with time.

[...] Bit of a dodgy knee this week so have had to withdraw from first two races of year. I thought it was just the kind of niggle you could ride through, but after a short 20 mile ride it was quite painful the next day. (it was a different niggle to discomfort in knee) [...]
