Stop Start Training

Cycling Yorkshire Dales

Not a recent photo!. As a reader mentioned, sometimes it’s just nice to see photos from the height of summer, when we can ride in short sleeves and shorts.

This winter, my training has been a bit stop-start. I’ve rarely managed two consecutive days of training, mostly managing to get out three times a week. During the winter, (Nov-Jan) the rides have been mainly two hour rides around 35 or 40 miles. On average, I have been doing 100-150 miles a week. It’s a fairly good base to work on, and I feel fairly fit. But, I also want to start doing more. One goal this year is the National One hundred mile TT championship; for this I really need to start doing some five hour rides of  80 – 100 miles.

One goal I have in the back of my mind is to cycle 1000 miles in February, but that is asking a lot with so many other pressures on my time.

At least I’ve had a good break from the intense interval sessions of September and October, most riding has been done at a steady but brisk pace. But, around this time of the year, I start to get impatient to start riding fast. I don’t know about training plans, I just enjoy cycling fast.

Yesterday I chose an almost pancake flat circuit of 40 miles around Stadhampton and Watlington and was averaging around 22-23mph without actually racing. Towards the end of February I might do some time trial intervals and if things go well, do my first races at end of Feb, beginning of March. After long winter, I’m very much looking forward to longer days and start of racing season.
