Supplements for Knee Pain

Bit of a dodgy knee this week so have had to withdraw from first two races of year. I thought it was just the kind of niggle you could ride through, but after a short 20 mile ride it was quite painful the next day. (it was a different niggle to discomfort in knee)

I also got a cricked neck. (Probably related to cycling into town with one leg). It’s funny a small pain in the right knee and a pulled muscle in your left neck and you realise how fragile the old body can be.

I’m hopeful it won’t last too long, but, I’ll just have to see. When you’re fired up, it can be frustrating to get a spanner in the works like this. But, what can you do? – I guess you can always spend all day writing articles about cycling.

Whenever anything goes wrong, a good friend of mine swears there is a supplement to solve the problem. He has such enthusiasm and confidence in supplements that its infectious and you want to give it a go, even if for the placebo effect.

For knee pain many experts recommend Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM. I guess it can’t do any harm. Whether it works may depend on the type of knee pain. The supplement is said to work by strengthening knee cartilage and can help with musculo-skeletal problems.

My approach is usually to buy a supplement and take it for a few weeks. Though periodically I go through my cabinet and throw out tablets with were best before 2009 e.t.c.

I tried Glucosamine + Chondroitin for a year once after getting joint pains for some time. I didn’t notice any difference and gave them up. They’re quite expensive too.

Just watch which brand you are buying. Some brands like Seven Seas sale some glucosamine tablets containing some hydrogenated oil…
