The Foot Bike or the Big Man’s Skateboard

Ever wanted a glorified skateboard to get around town when  you don’t have a bicycle?

I can’t say I can think of an instance when I would want to use this foot bike, but I’m sure it could be useful in some circumstances. It works pretty well, on a flat smooth surface you get a decent forward movement from pushing off with the leg. It rolls quite smoothly and will travel much further than a skateboard with small wheels.

I saw this footbike at a recent time trial, people were having a go in the car park.

The big drawback is its size, it’s not so easy to pack in your pocket so you can scoot around an airport departure lounge. Perhaps it’s useful in a really big warehouse were you could use it to reduce walking time in between finding packets.

It is pretty steady and solid to use, you feel quite comfortable when using it. Brakes are pretty effective too – another advantage over the skateboard (which presumably only has falling off as a practical braking device.)

It is made from a standards lightweight 7005 Alloy frame.

Needless to say in the US, there is a footbike World Championships

A real skateboard on Oxford high street.

I tried one of these in the states earlier this year which had a battery powered front wheel. After looking for ages I eventually managed to find one in the UK (without the electric) at the site above. I bought the track version and fitted hybrid tires just to give a little more bounce on our less than perfect roads.

You do get lots of looks as people can’t figure what it is but as an alternative to running (I have shot knees) its great. 5-10 miles no problem and feel the benefits of a good workout.
