Earl Blumenauer, a Democrat congressman from Oregon wears a green bicycle lapel badge of the US congressional bike caucus pin.
On an edition of Newsnight Jeremy Paxman asked “Can I just ask you, Mr Blumenauer, what is that extraordinary green bicycle on your lapel?”
Blumenauer replied, “Well, I am aggressively ‘bike partisan’, and this is the congressional bike caucus membership pin.”
As city commissioner of Portland, Blumenauer presided over significant growth in bicycle use in the city – making it one of most bike friendly cities in the US.
The bicycle congressional caucus work”
“to provide congressional leadership in complementing the efforts of the millions of cyclists actively working for safer roads, more bikeways, convenient bike parking and increased recognition of the importance of cycling for transportation and recreation”
Recently, I posted about differences in European and US perspectives on cycling. One is that cycling tends to become more political in the US. But, it’s great to see someone like Blumenauer appear so passionate about cycling and try to change the US car culture. Good luck to him is all I can say!
I’m sure in American there will be some right wing ‘talk show hosts’ saying it is the badge of the devil or something like that.
Maybe I could dig out by Cub Scouts cycle badge….
They’ll say anyone who cycles doesn’t drive a 4×4 and is therefore a terrorist.
