Tools and Equipment I Take For A Bike Ride

tools

For every bike ride over 4 miles from home, I usually take the following:

  1. 2 Spare inner tubes
  2. Tyre leavers
  3. Pump. I have a pump fixed to bike to take up less space and so I never forget.
  4. Multi tool. Allen keys, screwdriver and chain tool. Chain tool can be invaluable; you can cycle slowly on a puncture, but no chain – no hope. Note it is best to transport in plastic bag to avoid rusting an expensive  multitool
  5. Waterproof. Unless the weather forecast is rock solid dry. But, generally, it is better to be safe than sorry. Note I carry it in a cut down old waterbottle. This means I can carry it on my bike rather than back pocket. I do this unless it is a long ride and need 2 waterbottles.
  6. Mobile Phone, with Taxi number. Can come in handy for emergencies.
  7. Wallet, with petty cash and credit card, useful if need to buy food or transport. Also carry photo id and useful phone numbers.
  8. Food and Water

Optional Extras I sometimes take

  • Camera
  • Map

Anything else you take on a ride?

That was a pretty comprehensive list tejvan. I also take self adhesive patches and a first aid kit with me as most of the terrain in derbyshire is hilly so coming off on a downhill section can be messy

My first thought on reading this was: “Wow, what a pessimist this guy is”, but when I read your list I realised that I take much the same amount of stuff – apart from only taking one inner tube, not two and no food or drink (in NL there’s nearly always a cafe within reach wherever you go).
