Tour de France – Will Bradley Wiggins Win?

The 2012 edition of the Tour de France starts with a unique situation. This year, for the first time ever, the overwhelming favourite is British. – Bradley Wiggins. Wiggins is the first to express surprise at finding himself in this spot as favourite. But, his early season form gives credence to those who think he can win. After first place in Paris-Nice, Criterium Dauphine and Tour de Romandie, Wiggins is the main man to beat.

Wiggins also has the backing of the strongest squad in cycling. Team Sky are light years away from the shamateurism of the old British scene and classic farces like the Linda McCartney team.  It seems Team Sky have developed the very un British habit of being very good and actually winning. Whereas once, it seemed impossible to satisfy the twin superstars of Wiggins and Cavendish within the same team, it seems that this year, at least, the team will be focuse don the yellow jersey – leaving Cavendish to concentrate on the Olympics and snatching sprint victories. Though I’d be surprised not to see Team Sky dominating the front of the race, even for sprinter stages.

To say Wiggins is overwhelming favourite is perhaps too optimistic. He’s clearly in great form, but winning the 3 week tour de France, is considerably different to a one week stage race. Despite his excellent 4th back in 2010, Wiggins still lacks a certain experience in this ultimate cycle race. From this perspective, Cadel Evans may be in a better position to defend his title than some give him credit.

If I had to put my Trek Madone on the result, I would definitely plump for Wiggins, but as the sporting cliche goes – at the end of the day – anything could happen in a 3 week tour. I just hope no crashes or bad luck mar his attempt.

Anyway, whoever dominates, I shall enjoy watching the tour unfold. The only downside being – how many hours will I lose getting sucked into watching the tour live on ITV4? I think it is a good job there are adverts on IVT4, they are so annoying they just may force me to go out and train on the bike instead…

Adverts are for toilet breaks and tea making moments!

Yes, ITV give us plenty of time for making tea, so I guess the toilet breaks more frequent too.
