Edge Cycle Works

Recently I went up to the Edge Cycle works in Lancaster to receive a cheque for breaking a course record at Jubilee Tower (6.57).

It was nice to visit Scott and the staff at the Edge. They have an obvious interest and enthusiasm for cycling. It reminds me of the local bike shop (Ellis Briggs, Shipley) where I got my first road bike (Reynolds 501) many years ago.

Whilst there, I bought a track pump (two have just died on me in short time) It was a Bontrager model at around £25. So far, it has worked very well.

I was planning to arrive for 2pm, and a few local cyclists had come along for the presentation. Unfortunately, I had one of those nightmare M6 drives, with slow traffic. There’s nothing worse than averaging 10mph up a congested M6 – especially when you know people are waiting for you and you’re going to be late. But, it turned out OK. We had a good chat about the Rake the next day, and I got one of those charity type magnified cheques. A novelty for me, but a very nice novelty. In any line of business, £250 is a good prize for seven minutes work. The hourly rate is definitely more than the £3.00 an hour I got from my first job working at the Little Chef.

So thanks to the Edgeworks for putting up the sponsor money.

Now, if only my bike had cost £230, I would have been in profit for the hill climb season…

Jack Pullar was also in the shop, as he lives nearby and had also done a 6.59 in a club even a few weeks before the Lancaster CC. He was perhaps a little nervous about the championship the next day. I really thought he would win, but I didn’t tell him that. I was impressed with his plans for racing next season.

Thanks also to Lancaster CC and Alistair Hodge for putting on the open. You can’t beat a good hill climb. I might not be able to be at Jubilee Tower next year because the date has moved forward and is the same weekend as our 24 hour race in Tooting Bec. But, I will definitely go back, the record can definitely be lowered.

Congratulations once again, that’s marvellous. I think if I ever won any kind of race I’d be on top-of-the-world for ages!

It’s a 24 hour running race organised by Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team. We do it every year. I usually do first 12 hour shift of counting runners go around the track. Kind of fun in a way.

I used to live in Tooting when I was a student in the early 80s. The area is characterised by a few very busy main roads (A24, etc.), narrow-ish side streets and 100s of acres of 19th century terraces houses … plus a surprisingly large common.
