Space Taken By Cars and Bikes

If I was a car this is how much space I would take

You don’t have to look far to see people arguing over small bits of land. In city centre, especially, space is at a premium. Yet local road traffic policies often seek to encourage cars at the expense of bikes and pedestrians.

I’m not a great fan of critical mass rides, but, if cyclists or pedestrians really wanted to make a point they could use a contraption similar to this. It is a graphic illustration of the space taken up by cars compared to cyclists and pedestrians. Actually the space is greater. Because cars travel faster they need more passing distance and more parking space. This particular contraption looks to be the size of a small car rather than a big 4WD

There are many narrow lanes where a car will squeeze past a cyclist. I sometimes wish I had a contraption like this to make the car wait or at least make it pass with greater care. It also frustrates me how intolerant motorists are with cyclists cycling in double file.

It is also a powerful case for greater pedestrianisation of city centres. It is simply more efficient to encourage pedestrians and cyclists than cars.

In any city you will see a shortage of bike parking space. Yet, for every 1 car, you could easily park 6-7 bikes. It is more efficient and significantly cheaper.
