It’s not me and it’s not snowing. But it felt as cold as this on returning to England after being in Malaysia (average 25 degrees C)
After a lengthy period off the bike, it is always a great feeling to get back on the bike. Today, the weather was cold, damp and grey. I was jet lagged and recovering from a cold. But, after 3 weeks off the bike, it’s just good to have the sensation of riding a bike – even if you do have to work hard to climb moderate hills.
I had a holiday in Malaysia so with Christmas I spent nearly 3 weeks off the bike. I didn’t do any exercise apart from a small amount of walking. It would have been good to do some swimming or maybe running, but, I felt no inspiration so the 2 weeks passed and I did no training. My theory is that taking 2 weeks off the bike does no harm; some fitness will be lost, but it should be easy to get it back. I know of some long distance runners who take a much longer period of in the winter before resuming training.
If I had been back in England, I probably wouldn’t have done much training anyway since it has been so cold.
Targets for New Year on the Bike.
I would like to do a 50 and 100 mile time trial. I’d also like to set pbs at 10 miles and 25 miles. Currently my best times are
20.19 – 10 miles
52.57 – 25 miles
Last year I did about 8 races. I think that was insufficient; I will try to do more races this year. It’s hard to push yourself when you’re just training on your own.
