Night Photos of Cyclists and Oxford

night

The Sheldonian theatre and a full moon.

The full moon inspired me to take out my tripod and take some photos of cyclists at night. It was very difficult to take photos of cyclists at night, because you need the cyclist to be still. Basically this means catching them when they stop at traffic lights. But, at night time, with little traffic around it was hard to find any cyclist who would actually stop at traffic lights.

About 25% of cyclists didn’t have lights. But, the police only have one session a year to catch cyclists without lights. Cyclists get fined £30 and if you produce a receipt for a new pair of lights the next day you get your fine back!

It’s a good idea to lock up a bike very securely at night. Also remove any thing like lights that can be taken by drunk people. I had a front wheel removed when I locked up a bike one evening.

A person I know had a bike stolen. He spotted it in town locked up and phoned me (I dont know why he did that bit)
I told him to add another lock.
he then went out partying and forgot about the bike, when he retuned to his lock, it had been cut and a threatening letter was attached!
The bike had two wheels originally like the one in the photo.

Real nice photos there, cycling at night is so tranquil

Seeing the picture of the bike locked up reminds me of a mate who had his bike stolen. He locked it up with two very expensive D locks but when he went to get it, he found a third lock on it which wasn’t his. He was stuffed. He went to the police station to ask for advice but they didn’t help. When he returned the next day it was gone. It seems it was a ploy to allow the thieves to steal the bike at night. Be careful.
