Cycling around New York was pretty testing. But, even so there seem to be quite a few cyclist who braved the conditions of Manhatten. American drivers are not noted for their patience towards cyclists and pedestrians. And from what I have picked up, New York cyclists feel under siege to some extent. Not helped by high profile youtube videos showing cyclists get knocked off their bike by NYPD on critical mass rides around New York (youtube link). There seems to be a certain antagonism, but, despite the difficulties, cycling remains one of the quicker ways to get round and it does seem to on the increase.
