There are some things that are supposed to put you off cycling, but have never put me off. See also: Reasons people don’t cycle
These are things that are not as bad as they seem
Punctures.
Getting punctures has never really bothered me. Once I learnt how to put in a new inner tube, it’s really quite a quick operation. (as long as your spare tubes don’t have holes already like one occasion. If you use armadillo tyres or other suitable puncture resistant tyre, punctures can be very rare. see: Tips for avoiding punctures
Riding on Dual Carriageways.
It seems crazy to cycle on dual carriageways with cars travelling along at 60- 70mph. But, ironically, cycling on dual carriageways doesn’t feel that bad when you do it. I think part of the reason is that you are given more space by cars and junctions tend to be clearer. Racing on dual carriageways can feel much safer than racing on narrow roads where cars may try to squeeze past. However, although it isn’t as bad as it looks, an accident on a dual carriageway is more likely to be serious because of the speeds involved.
Riding into the Wind.
Riding into the wind can be demoralising because you’re speed drops and you have to crawl along. The secret is not to get frustrated and just drop down gears and maintain the constant cadence and effort. Don’t be a slave to your speedometer but ride at the effort level that you want. – riding into wind
Riding up Hills.
Some cyclists fear hills and will do anything to avoid them. But, if you train for them and lower your expectations they are not as bad as you think. tips for cycling up hills
Stopping at Lights.
When I started cycling traffic lights were just a nuisance, but, now I don’t mind stopping at red lights. It’s just an issue of acceptance and a little bit of patience.
Shaving Legs
The thought of shaving my legs to become a ‘real cyclist’ didn’t exactly fill me with eager anticipation. But, once you’d done it once, you secretly rather like the smooth skin showing off your bulging biceps… (or not as the case may be for a skinny climber)
However, waxing legs / epilators is painful whatever anyone says. You wouldn’t find me doing it in the off season.
Commuting in the Wet.
The idea of cycling in the rain is very unappealing, but, with the right waterproofs it really is fine. e.g. waterproof trousers
