British Time Trial Championships 2009

Bradley Wiggins overtaking a rider on his 30mph ride.

As a cycling blogger, I try to write about interesting things, so I tend not to talk about my time trial racing too much, as it’s not exactly the most exciting aspect of the sport. But, this weekend’s British Time Trial Championships is probably the highlight of the season. There were over 250 riders including quite a few former World Champions and Olympic medallist.

Also riding was Bradley Wiggins, 4th in this year’s Tour de France. Bradley is one of the world’s top time triallists and he won convincingly in 1.02. Michael Hutchinson was second 2 minutes back. But, that’s still a great ride as Bradley will put over 2 minutes into many of the top continental pros. I finished 28th in the senior men, a whopping 9 minutes behind Bradley Wiggins. I covered the 31 mile course in an average speed of 26mph. It’s really mind boggling that Bradley did the lumpy course at an average speed of over 30mph.

It was great to ride with a crowd of spectators. Apart from hill climbs, that’s quite unusual for a time trial. It certainly helps having household names like Bradley Wiggins ride.

Road became a little narrow with parked cars.

I don’t think this lady was racing.

Many photographers were out on the course

Thanks also to Summertown bike shop mechanic, Andy Sherwood, who spent Thursday evening setting up my new time trial frame!

Wiggo has really turned into a great all-round rider. Can’t wait to see what he can do next year.

well done, being only 9 minutes behind Wiggins is a great effort. I timed myself up Mont Ventoux the day before the Tour de France this year, then timed Wiggins the next day… I was 35 minutes slower, and I hadn’t ridden myself into the ground for the 3 weeks leading up to Ventoux!

I kept an eye out for you, but never managed to spot you! New bike looks a bit tasty! It was a good day wasn’t it, and Wiggins was unbelievable. Good set of pictures, they tell the story of the day well ~ I especially like the picture of the young photographer!
