Blackburn roads have so many bloomin potholes! And young racer lads driving hired cards too – honestly hate the ride to my other half’s house in Bburn town centre. Bits of Accrington can be just as bad and dont even mention the Rossendale Gyratory and road to Haslingden! Thankfully miles and miles of other good cycling routes in East Lancs. Phew
Blackburn & Darwen: on my most recent LEJOG ride I made the mistake of booking into the Slaidburn YHA – which is in a gloroious part of the world but not so good when cycling there from Blackburn … them thar hills could be the reason why there isn’t much cycling there.
Having said that, once the moors to High Bentham and beyond had been dealt with, there was a nice steady climb up the Lune Gorge – which was superb; the decent from Shap northward is worthwhile.
I’m very disappointed to see how poorly my area, and neighbouring areas, do – Chiltern – though I think the reason it is so low is the same one why you cycle here at times: hills. You can’t go more than a couple of miles without having steep hills to climb or decend, often on narrow roads, and I think it puts a lot of people off.
What a shame. They are missing out.
Maybe, though Bristol is quite hilly and for short distances it doesn’t seem to discourage too much
