Inserts / Wedges for Cycle Shoes

A reader mentioned that sometimes knee pain can be allieviated by  using inserts or wedges for cycle shoes.

When I visited Bike Fit a few years ago, they suggested some wedge inserts in my pedal cleats to slightly change the angle of the knee. If a leg has a habit of bending inwards  or outwards, these inserts can slightly change the angle of the leg cycle to keep the pedal going in the correct circle.

The idea of wedges is to reduce lateral movement and enable a more comfortable ride.

In addition, at the same time, I got some moulds made to the contours of my foot. This reduce the amount of air between your foot and the bottom of the shoe. With these moulds, your whole foot feels in contact with the shoe.

I have been using them for the past three or four years. I felt they were good and have kept using them. With the insert into the foot, it does give a greater sense of contact between your foot and the shoe.

When Nicole Cooke had some knee problems  she visited Cycle Fit and the wedges helped her get a stronger pedal action and reduce her knee pain.

If you have knee problems, it may be another thing that can help. I would recommend checking it out.

It won’t be the solution to all problems, but sometimes you need a combination of many different factors.
