New Year Cycling

Over Christmas, I took quite a break from blogging. I would like to say, I spent  the saved time training and going to the gym, but it wasn’t quite like that. I did manage to keep ‘ticking over’ which probably means I did about 700 miles in December.

One thing, I really noticed was the momentum effect. When I took four days off cycling, it was harder to get inspired to go back out. You can easily slip out of the routine, and before you know it several days have passed. But, once you get out, and get some miles in your legs, you’re more motivated to go out the next day. Over Christmas, I went out for three consecutive days and I could have kept going out everyday, if other things hadn’t come into my schedule.

I was quite relaxed about an easy schedule, going out when I wanted to, but now it is the New Year, I will be starting to plan ahead for this year.

New Year’s Resolutions for 2012

  1. Train smarter (sounds very  impressive)
  2. Write unique, interesting articles on cycling that have never been written before, like ‘Should helmets be compulsory?‘ – ‘Why cycling on Britain’s roads is rubbish’
  3. Learn what it means to train smarter.
  4. Remember to breath (a la Obree breathing guide)
  5. Ride my bikes and enjoy it.

 Targets for 2012

  • Improve on best placing in a national championship of 4th (2005, 2010)
  • Do at least one 100 mile time trial (and hopefully national 100) (Amazingly, I never cycled 100 miles in 2011)
  • Break more course records for hill climbs
  • Ride some early season hilly time trials I’ve never ridden before.

Targets for Pb’s

  • 10 miles – 18.59 (currently 20.07)
  • 25 miles – 49.59 on non-Welsh course. (currently 49.35 or 50.47)
  • 50 miles – 1.42.00 (currently (1.49.37)
  • 100 miles – 3.45.00 (currently 3.52.00)

Do you have any  targets or new year’s resolutions for 2012?
