Cycling in Malaysia

cycling

I’m currently on holiday in Malaysia. I did not bring my bike nor have I hired one. I have done no exercise for the past two weeks. I was going to try and so some swimming but never got round to it.

I am staying in the city of Kuching. Push bikes are a pretty rare sight. Cars and scooters are the most popular means of transport

The only people I’ve seen cycling are old men. I never saw a woman on a bike.

This bike looks almost impossible to cycle. It’s being used for carrying goods. There is a saddle and pedals, but, I saw the guy pushing the tricycle.

The big cycling event in Malaysia is of course the Tour of Langkawi, which is one of the earliest pro cycling races in the calender.

The compulsory tourist shot…

Hi ,The most fantastic cycling experience you missed out on,but it was not without it’s difficulties.Just a brief line or two,did a solo cycle trip 1989/1990 across Borneo.Cycled from Kuching, across Sarawak thru Brunei, & finished off at Kota Kinabulu.I also ditched the bike for a while & went up the Rajang river (Sarawak) a good way up past Belaga, to some of the more remote villages, to stay with some of the tribes in that area in the long houses. Had to leave the Island 2 weeks earlier than planned ,& got a flight up to Kuala Lumpar, stayed over night then flew onto Lankawi & chilled out cycling round the Island. Hoping to do a similar trip again in 2013, got to get saving up as I dont know what costs will be in a few years time, with the way things are at mo! If you are going out there again do take your bike & plan well ahead. The Malaysian people are second to none, the hospitality I received from all walks of life will never be forgotten, & I’m hoping to retrace some of my previous routes ,when I return so that I can revisit some of these kind people. I am not a regular cyclist, bike has been sat in shed for the last year or so gathering dust, but when I do get it out I do some long journeys, & feel the pain in them unused muscles, not to mention the buttocks! If you go back out there again, don’t forget take the bike!
