Veteran Racing

John Woodburn – great Vet racer.

Today, I did a 10 mile TT organised by the Veteran Time Trial association. It was held on a local course at Cranbrook / Reading on the H10/10. I finished in 1st place out of 28 with a time of 22.11. Most of the other riders were vets (over 40), but it’s still nice to win a race!

It reminds me of a time when I had a job interview for teaching Economics (I still have the same job 10 years later) I had just joined the Sri Chinmoy Centre and took the job of organising 2 mile running races for Sri Chinmoy A.C. inĀ  Oxford (at the Peace Mile Cutteslowe Park) so I put this down on my C.V. The person who interviewed me had, the previous year, won one of our races and still had the trophy! He said it was the only race he had ever won, but thatĀ  was because only 4 people had done the race! But, he was happy to have a trophy saying he came 1st. – And I got the job.

Veterans are the backbone of time trial racing in the UK. There are many riders who keep racing into their 60s, 70s and even 80s. One of the great vet riders is John Woodburn who still does very good times aged 72. See: Racing into old age
